Background
The United States has had troops in South Korea for almost six decades, starting in 1945 following World War II. Today, there are 100 U.S. military bases throughout South Korea with 37,000 troops. From the 1950s to 1970s, the United States Forces in Korea (USFK) and the Republic of Korea cooperatively agreed to set up “rest and relaxation” centers for U.S. troops. The purpose was to provide entertainment and improve the morale of the troops... According to one estimate, over one million Korean women have been used in prostitution by U.S.

Ways Korean Women Have been Trafficked into the United States:
- -Uninspected entry women are smuggled across borders
- -The use of counterfeit documents
- -Entry on student or tourist visas
-Sham marriages to U.S. military personnel
The Military
-small villages are formed around the military bases in Korea which include: brothels, clubs, bars, barbershops, and tailor shops that focus on sex trafficking to soldiers, including our U.S. soldiers.
-there is one "sex worker" for every two or three soldiers
These women are treated like criminals not as trafficking victims.
